Virus that attacks ms word spell check

When am typing something in English it selectively underscores certain words as misspelled. The when I right click on that word it only offers Spanish options. I have opened the Language Preferences and deleted all reference to Spanish. In the Proofing box, I only have English. I have re-booted Word after making these fixes. It still does the same thing.

It selectively chooses some words that it wants to change to Spanish. Here is an example: " The Saticoy Street entrance " The word "entrance" is underscored, but the other words are not.

Note that uninstalling the Spanish proofing tools does not prevent Word from thinking that a certain word is in Spanish. Have you checked which language Word thinks has been applied to the problematic words? Remember that language is a text property in Word; you can apply it to a range of text characters or even to a single character.

The Language dialog box will tell you which language Word has applied to the current word, and you will be able to change it. Confirm the setting by clicking OK. Word has reverted to spell check in Spanish and I can't change it. This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. Resolved my issue. Clear instructions. Easy to follow. No jargon. Pictures helped.

Didn't match my screen. Incorrect instructions. Too technical. Not enough information. Since a manual spellcheck fails, that points back to the option "Do not check spelling or grammar" which behaves very much like other character formatting for example, italic, bold or underline. Can you save a sample document with the problem on DropBox or OneDrive and post a view link here? Yes, I think it does. When I select just the misspelled words, or the whole paragraph with the misspelled words, it insists on checking the "Hide spelling errors" box in Word Options and it is grayed out.

When I uncheck "Check spelling" and recheck it, I can turn off the "Hide Spelling Errors" box, but it makes no difference and turns itself back on. Any way to fool the software into thinking this is a different document--changing the saved name has no effect.

I have followed all available guidance on line I could find, short of a full program reload. I have turned off automatic language detection and put it in English mode manually, made sure that the " do not check spelling" check box in that dialogue box is unchecked.

This problem arose spontaneously, just as the ability to cut and past images with the mouse disappeared spontaneously a few weeks ago. I found the workaround for cutting and pasting images, such that it is, but no luck with spellcheck. How can I fix it? Is this a random error or related to an update? Many thanks!
